Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northumberland is renowned for its stunning coastline, picturesque rolling hills scattered with prehistoric remains and a sprinkling of quaint market towns and castle-crowned villages. On this weekend break well explore some of this wonderful regions best attractions from our base of Sunderland. Well discover the attractive market town of Alnwick where admission to the spectacular castle and gardens is included, visit the fascinating Hartlepool Maritime Museum; a superb recreation of an 18th century seaport where you can re-live life aboard a real British Naval frigate, and discover what life was like in North East England during times gone by at the multi-award winning Beamish Museum. This unique open air museum features a variety of recreated towns and villages with people dressed in costumes actively reliving the story of everyday life in the area.
A modern four star hotel located next to the Stadium of Light, just a short distance from Sunderland city centre. Day One
We travel into Northumberland and on to Hartlepool where we visit the Hartlepool Maritime Museum. This excellent recreation of an 18th century seaport tells the story of life at sea at the time of Nelson, Napoleon and the Battle of Trafalgar, and incorporates a host of activities plus exciting live demonstrations. After our visit we’ll travel to our hotel in Sunderland with some time to relax before dinner this evening.
Day Two
Today we journey along the Northumberland coast to the elegant town of Alnwick where admission to the splendid medieval castle is included. Rich in fascinating history, Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country and one of the UK's most significant heritage destinations. It has also taken starring roles in a number of film and television productions including Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter films. Admission is also included to spectacular Alnwick Garden, an award-winning visitor attraction and tranquil haven with 12 acres of magnificently manicured gardens to meander through.
B, DDay Three
This morning we leave our hotel and make our way to the Beamish Museum, a world famous open air museum where costumed folk tell the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s & 1940s. There will be time at leisure to enjoy this fantastic museum before we commence our homeward journey mid-afternoon.
