Brugge, Ypres & The Last Post

Brugge, Ypres & The Last Post

Visit one of Europe's most beautiful cities. This trip to Brugge also includes a trip to the historic town of Ypres and watching the famous Last Post.

This beautiful Flemish gem is undoubtedly one of the prettiest and most perfectly preserved medieval cities in Europe whose prosperity reached a peak in the 13th & 14th centuries. Known as the ‘Venice of the North’ Brugge is like a city straight out of a fairy tale, a delightful medieval town with a maze of atmospheric cobbled streets, meandering canals and photogenic market squares surrounded by medieval town-houses and architectural masterpieces like the Gothic-style Town Hall and the magnificent 13th century Belfry. Brugge is also especially attractive at night when many of the buildings are floodlit.

The four star Academie Hotel is situated right in the historic “Golden Triangle” of Brugge, just 50 metres from the famous Minnewater (Lake of Love) and with easy access on foot to the city centre. The stylish rooms all feature air-conditioning, telephone and satellite TV. Other facilities include a restaurant and bar, plus a lovely winter garden and terrace. Lift to all floors.

Day One: Early departure to Folkestone for our journey through the Eurotunnel to France. On arrival we continue on to Belgium and the Academie Hotel in the delightful city of Brugge. This evening relax and enjoy a meal and maybe a lovely Belgian beer in one of the many excellent restaurants and bistros located around the historic centre.

Day Two: A day at leisure to discover the delights of this wonderful medieval city. Perhaps take a horse-drawn carriage ride to discover the picturesque cobbled streets and their irresistible chocolate shops and lace parlours, or maybe a boat ride along the canals to experience the remarkable peace and calm of the city.

Day Three: Today we take a drive through the Flanders countryside to visit Ypres, a town with strong associations with the First World War. Highlights in Ypres include the medieval Cloth Hall which dates back to 1304 and houses the ‘In Flanders Fields Museum’, plus the famous Menin Gate, placed there in honour of those who perished in the war and where each evening the Last Post is sounded at 8.00pm and has done so since 1929. We will stay in Ypres this evening until the ceremony has finished, a very poignant and moving event.

Day Four: A further day at leisure for exploring the delights of this Unesco World Heritage City.

Day Five: We check out and return to the Eurotunnel terminal at Calais for our journey back to Folkestone and on home to North Wales.
