Garden of England

The county of Kent in south east England is steeped in history and heritage and is world renowned as the ‘Garden of England’. This tour includes a train ride on the world’s smallest public railway, a visit to magnificent Leeds Castle and a boat trip on the River Medway

The county of Kent in south east England is steeped in history and heritage and is renowned as the ‘Garden of England’. It is said that this stems back to the time of Henry V111 who was responsible for many orchards being established in Kent whose blossoms still contribute to the garden like aspect of the county today. We will be staying at Ashford from where we will include a train ride on the world’s smallest public railway, a visit to magnificent Leeds castle and a boat trip on the River Medway.

The four star Ashford International Hotel is centrally situated just a five minute walk from the town centre. Facilities include restaurant and bar, plus swimming pool and spa, a rock sauna, steam room and beauty rooms offering a wide variety of spa treatments. All the large modern bedrooms are air-conditioned and feature flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, iron & board, telephone, hairdryer, plus tea/coffee making facilities.

  • We take a drive along the north Kent coast travelling via Faversham to Whitstable, famous for its Oysters, then via Herne Bay to the resort of Margate. From here we head to the ancient walled city of Canterbury with its magnificent cathedral that dominates the city skyline, a place of pilgrimage for centuries and the home of English Christianity. Explore the labyrinth of medieval streets and maybe visit the ‘Canterbury Tales' audio-visual experience.

  • We travel to Hythe for our included ride on ‘the world’s smallest public railway’ travelling via Dymchurch, New Romney and Romney Marsh to Dungeness nature reserve where our coach will be waiting. From here we will visit the ancient Cinque Port of Rye, a fortified hilltop town that was once surrounded by the sea, then continue on to the market town of Tenterden, the long-dubbed "Jewel of the Weald" with its broad tree lined high street and ancient architecture.

  • Enjoy a visit to magnificent Leeds Castle, described as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’, beautifully positioned on two small islands in the midst of a lake and surrounded by 500 acres of parklands. The castle has been home to Royalty, lords and ladies for over 1000 years. See the magnificent architecture, sumptuous interiors and family treasures, plus the aviaries, black swans, peacocks and falcons. From here we head in to Maidstone where we have an included sightseeing cruise on the delightful River Medway.

  • Four nights accommodation with dinner and breakfast.

  • Admission to Leeds Castle

  • Hythe to New Romney Railway.

  • Cruise on the River Medway.
