Stresa, Milan & Maggiore Express

Picturesque Stresa is the largest and best known resort on the lake with a colourful promenade lined with elegant stylish hotels and villas and lovely old squares and narrow cobbled streets in the town centre to explore

The splendour and majestic beauty of Lake Maggiore stretches from the snow capped mountains of Switzerland on the northern shores, to the Italian Plains in the south. Enchanting landscapes of alpine peaks, serene blue waters, and luxuriant vegetation. Picturesque Stresa is the largest and best known resort on the lake with a colourful promenade lined with elegant stylish hotels and villas and lovely old squares and narrow cobbled streets in the town centre to explore. This tour also includes a journey on the spectacular Lake Maggiore express (Centovalli railway) travelling from Domodossola to Locarno in Switzerland.

The La Palma is a modern elegant four star hotel situated in its own beautiful gardens just across the road from the lake and only a short walk from the town centre. Facilities include restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor pool, spa area with sauna, steam room, salt cabin and fitness room plus the rooftop 'Sky Bar & Pool' All bedrooms feature air- conditioning, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, hairdryer, minibar, and telephone.  Lift to all floors.

Day One: We depart in the early hours for our journey south to Folkestone and through the Eurotunnel to Calais, then on to our overnight hotel in delightful Troyes, the former historic capital of the Champagne Region. This medieval old town features narrow, cobbled streets lined with colourful half-timbered houses mostly dating from the 16th century.

Day Two: We continue travelling south through the Alsace Region to Basel, then on via Lucerne and the beautiful Swiss Alps to the Gotthard Tunnel which takes us into Italy. We then descend to Bellinzona and continue to the shores of Lake Maggiore and the Hotel La Palma where we stay for six nights.

Day Three: A day at leisure to explore Stresa, perhaps take a tranquil walk along the lake promenade and absorb the stunning scenery or you may like to explore the Borromean Islands, a convenient hop-on & hop-off ferry service is available sailing between the three islands – Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori.

Day Four: Today we visit the magnificent city of Milan where a guided tour is included. One of the most important and stylish cities in Italy, cosmopolitan Milan is renowned as the world's capital of fashion and design, but is also awash with art, cultural heritage and striking historic architecture. Elegantly combining old and new the city features ultra-modern towers juxtaposed with the grand Gothic Duomo, ancient Milanese palaces and the world-famous La Scala Opera House.

Day Five: Today we have a leisurely excursion to pretty Lake Orta, one of the smallest of northern Italy's alpine lakes. We visit the charming lakeside village of Orta San Giulio, rich in history with quaint narrow cobbled streets, aristocratic houses, courtyards, elaborate palaces and the picturesque central square with its frescoed 16th century town hall.

Day Six: This morning we head to Domodossola where we take our seats on the ‘Lake Maggiore Express’. This narrow gauge blue and white train, also known as the ‘Centovalli’ makes its way to Locarno in Switzerland travelling through a region commonly referred to as the ‘Valley of the Painters’, passing breath-taking gorges and waterfalls, over spectacular bridges and through colourful vineyards. On arrival in Locarno enjoy some free time to explore this popular Swiss resort, then we board the coach and drive along the shores of Lake Maggiore back to Stresa.

Day Seven: A further day at leisure to relax and explore Stresa or you may like to take a cable ride to Monte Mattarone, one of the best ways to view Lake Maggiore. The first stage of the cable car climbs up to Alpino where a short stroll will take you to the Alpine Gardens. You can wander freely around the terraces and admire the magnificent views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The second stage of the cable car then takes you on to Mottarone where a 10 to 15 minute walk will take you to the summit. From there you have a 360° view which includes 7 lakes and the beautiful Mount Rosa.

Day Eight: We leave Stresa this morning and travel back through Switzerland into France for another overnight stay at Troyes.
