Wells, Bath & Cheddar Gorge

Wells, Bath & Cheddar Gorge

Our base for exploring the delightful region of Somerset is the historic city of Wells, England's smallest city with quaint cobbled streets and the magnificent Cathedral. As well as discovering the charms of Wells, we will explore the fantastic city of Bath with its plethora of attractions including the remarkably preserved Roman Baths.

With its pastoral landscape of hedgerows, vast fields and rolling hills, sleepy Somerset is the very picture of the rural English countryside. Our base for exploring this delightful region is the historic city of Wells, England’s smallest city with quaint cobbled streets, medieval architecture and the magnificent cathedral. As well as discovering the charms of Wells, we will explore the fantastic city of Bath with its plethora of attractions including the remarkably preserved Roman Baths.

The award-winning Swan Hotel is located in a beautiful setting directly opposite Wells Cathedral. Amenities include a health suite with sauna and gym, a bar and lounge, a beautiful wood panelled restaurant, and the Swan Terrace with views over Cathedral Green. Bedrooms feature TV, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. There is no lift but a limited number of ground floor rooms are available.

  • We make our way to the edge of the Mendip Hills and Britain’s largest gorge at Cheddar. Here you may like to visit the Museum of prehistory and there will be an opportunity to take an open top bus tour through the dramatic landscape of the gorge and see spectacular views of the Mendips. You can then enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants in Cheddar and maybe sample some real Cheddar cheese. The Gough’s and Cox’s caves can also be visited but please note this will involve steep steps.

  • A full day exploring the charming Cathedral city of Wells. Our day commences with a visit to the bustling Somerset Farmers’ Market, where traditional Somerset cider, preserves, artisanal breads and local cheeses are some of the many products sold at this award-winning market. After perusing the market, we will embark on a guided walking tour of Wells and learn about the history of Wells Cathedral, the famous 14th Century astronomical clock, the Bishop’s Palace, the town crier and the remarkable Vicars’ Close.

  • We travel to the spectacular city of Bath where we will be joined by a guide for a tour of the city’s iconic attractions and architecture. See famous sights such as the Pump Rooms and Roman Baths, beautiful Bath Abbey, plus the magnificent Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge. This afternoon enjoy some free time to further discover Bath’s numerous attractions, including excellent galleries and museums, varied shops and a great choice of pubs and restaurants.
