Gardens of Ireland

Day One

We travel to Holyhead for a morning Irish Sea crossing to Dublin Port. Upon arrival in Ireland, we disembark the ferry and travel to the captivating wild gardens of Mount Usher. Crafted across four generations by the visionary Walpole family, Mount Usher stands as a remarkable testament to the artistry of "Robinsonian" garden design. Nestled along the sheltered valley of the River Vartry, the garden boasts an impressive canopy of diverse trees and shrubs-a breathtaking spectacle that serves as both a show-stopping display and a wellspring of inspiration for every gardening enthusiast. Following our visit we travel to the Arklow Bay Hotel, where we stay for the next three nights.

Day Two

This morning we visit the National Botanic Gardens at Kilmacurragh, an extraordinary sanctuary showcasing plant diversity from around the world. Discover an extensive collection of plant species introduced to Ireland, alongside the renowned displays of rhododendrons and conifers. See the botanical wonders of Kilmacurragh, where every turn reveals fascinating plant life and natural beauty. We then travel to Wicklow, a charming resort with a picturesque shingle beach. Enjoy some free time to explore the town and have lunch before continuing our scenic journey to the picturesque village of Avoca, made famous as the setting for the much-loved television series Ballykissangel. Nestled in a lush valley where two rivers meet, Avoca is renowned for its stunning scenery and charming village character. Stand on the historic Lion Bridge, where the two rivers come together and take in the beautiful landscape that has inspired visitors and artists for generations.

Day Three

Today we visit Russborough House & Park, one of Ireland’s most beautiful and historic country houses. During a guided tour, we will delve into the fascinating history of Russborough, uncovering the stories behind its magnificent architecture, world-class art collection and the generations of people who called it home. There will also be time to explore the beauty of the estate’s 200 acres of parkland at your own pace. This afternoon, we continue to the renowned Irish National Stud and its adjoining Japanese Gardens, a tranquil and enchanting place to wander. Few places better capture the spirit of County Kildare, the beating heart of Ireland’s thoroughbred industry, than the National Stud. Set amid outstanding natural beauty, this unique attraction is home to some of the world’s finest thoroughbred horses, as well as wonderfully landscaped gardens that provide a memorable insight into one of Ireland’s most celebrated traditions.

Day Four

We check out of the Arklow Bay hotel this morning and travel to the beautiful Powerscourt Gardens that are set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Sugarloaf Mountain and boast a lovely blend of striking terraces, fine statuary, ornamental lakes and a wide variety of trees. The gardens were recently voted No.3 in the World's Top Ten Gardens by National Geographic, and it is easy to see why. Designed from 1731 onwards and stretching over 47 acres, the estate includes formal walled gardens, distinctive Italian and Japanese gardens and the Pepperpot Tower, modelled on a pepper pot from Lord Powerscourt's dining table! After our visit we travel back to Dublin and board our return ferry for the crossing back to Holyhead. From there, we continue the short, final leg of our journey home.
