West Highland Line & Glencoe Explorer

Day One

We begin our journey north, travelling through ever changing landscapes as we make our way into the heart of Scotland. Crossing the border, rolling countryside gradually gives way to the dramatic mountains and glistening lochs of the Highlands.

As we venture deeper into the region, the scenery becomes ever more striking. Passing through the magnificent landscapes of Glencoe, with its towering peaks and sweeping valleys, we arrive at the beautifully located Isles of Glencoe Hotel.

There will be time to settle in and relax before dinner, with the stunning Highland setting providing a wonderful first impression of the days ahead.

Day Two

A day of outstanding coastal scenery awaits as we journey south along the shores of Loch Linnhe to the picturesque harbour town of Oban, often referred to as the Gateway to the Isles. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the waterfront, browse local shops or simply relax in one of the many cafés overlooking the harbour.

This afternoon we continue through the beautiful landscapes of Argyll to the elegant town of Inveraray, where you'll have free time to explore at your own pace. Stroll along the charming streets, admire the impressive, whitewashed buildings, visit the independent shops or enjoy refreshments overlooking the peaceful waters of Loch Fyne.

Our return journey takes us along the shores of Loch Fyne and over the famous Rest and Be Thankful, where far-reaching views across the surrounding mountains provide a memorable close to the day.

Day Three

A truly special day unfolds as we travel through the dramatic scenery of Glencoe to Fort William, where we board the famous West Highland Line.

This remarkable rail journey is often described as one of the finest in the world. As the train departs Fort William, it hugs the shores of Loch Eil before climbing gently into the mountains, revealing ever changing views of remote glens, heather covered hillsides and sparkling lochs. The route passes close to Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, before reaching the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, where the train curves gracefully across the arches high above the valley floor.

Continuing westwards, the line traverses wild and unspoilt landscapes, offering glimpses of white sandy beaches and distant islands as it approaches the coast. On arrival in the charming fishing village of Mallaig, there is time to explore and enjoy lunch at leisure.

Later, we return by coach along the spectacular Road to the Isles, where sweeping coastal views and rugged scenery accompany us back towards our hotel.

Day Four

Today we explore some of the Highlands' most iconic locations, beginning with a visit to the impressive Glenfinnan Viaduct and monument, beautifully situated at the head of Loch Shiel.

We continue to Fort William, where you will have free time to enjoy lunch and take in the atmosphere of this lively Highland town. A stop is also made at Neptune's Staircase, an impressive flight of canal locks on the Caledonian Canal.

This afternoon we ascend the mountainside on the Nevis Range Mountain Gondola, where stunning panoramic views stretch across Ben Nevis and the surrounding peaks. Throughout the day, the dramatic scenery of Glencoe provides a constant and unforgettable backdrop.

Day Five

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the Highlands and begin our journey home. Leaving behind the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe, we retrace our route south through ever changing scenery.

With suitable comfort stops along the way, we arrive home later in the day, bringing to a close a memorable Highland escape rich in scenery, heritage and unique experiences.
