Picturesque North Devon has some of the most beautiful coastline in the British Isles, studded with tiny harbour-towns, quaint villages, excellent beaches and cliff-top walks, all designated as “an area of outstanding natural beauty”. North Devon is also bordered by the Exmoor National Park, renowned for its striking countryside, coastal views and herds of wild deer. Our base for this holiday is the ancient market town of Barnstaple, reputed to be one of the oldest boroughs in the United Kingdom, set on the banks of the River Taw.

ROYAL & FORTESCUE HOTEL (3 STAR)

The three star Royal & Fortescue is a charming luxury hotel situated at the head of Barnstaple's historic High Street. Formerly a coaching inn this historic hotel earned its present title after patronage by King Edward VII. Facilities include three restaurants and a lounge bar, all bedrooms feature luxury toiletries from Gilchrist & Soames, LCD freeview TV, free Wi-Fi, telephone, hairdryer and tea / coffee making facilities. Lift available. Guests are also welcome to use the leisure facilities at the Barnstaple Hotel.

EXCURSIONS INCLUDED

  • We visit the picturesque towns of Lynton and Lynmouth where you can take a ride on the water-powered lift that travels between the two historic towns, ascending from Lynmouth at the foot of the cliffs to Lynton perched some 500 feet above. From here we make our way through scenic ‘Little Switzerland’, as the region is known, to the lovely village of Dunster with its castle and 17th century timber-framed market hall. We return to Barnstaple via the Exmoor National Park.

  • We spend the morning exploring Barnstaple with its elegant Georgian buildings and historic pannier market then drive to Arlington to visit Arlington Court, an intimate and intriguing treasure house in the care of the National Trust. The house itself, built in 1823, is set in picturesque gardens and a Carriage Museum in the stables houses a collection of carriages which includes the Speaker’s State Coach, a glorious gilded carriage with over 300 years of history, on loan from the Houses of Parliament.

  • A visit to the ancient seaport of Bideford set on the banks of the River Torridge. A medieval market town with narrow streets largely untouched by time and a magnificent 24 arch bridge that spans the river. From here we drive to Great Torrington for a visit to the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Rosemoor.

PRICE INCLUDES

  • Four nights accommodation with dinner and breakfast.

  • Admission to Arlington Court and RHS Rosemoor.

  • Excursions as described above.

  • Return transport by luxury air conditioned coach.
