The Enchanting Rhine & Moselle Valley

The Enchanting Rhine & Moselle Valley

Join us on this wonderful tour which discovers the Rhine region with journeys on some of the most charming railways of the Rhine as well as relaxing river cruises through the spectacular scenery of the Rhine and Moselle Valleys.

The majestic river valleys of the Rhine and Moselle represent some of the best-known regions in Germany where the outstandingly beautiful landscapes are magical with fairytale castles, quaint half-timbered houses, enchanting forests and a multitude of vineyards clinging to the hillsides. This wonderful tour discovers the region with journeys on some of the most charming railways of the Rhine as well as relaxing river cruises through the spectacular scenery of the Rhine and Moselle Valleys. Our base is the lovely riverside town of Boppard, known as the ‘Pearl of the Rhine’ located in a remarkably scenic spot on the largest horseshoe bend in the River Rhine.

This elegant four star ‘superior’ hotel is situated on the main riverside promenade, just a short distance from the town centre. The hotel is beautifully decorated in a ‘Belle Epoque’ style with gilded mirrors and artwork on the walls. Facilities include the Papillon Bar, the wood-panelled ‘Le Bristol’ restaurant, a candlelit wine cellar, plus a swimming pool, sauna and steam bath. All bedrooms feature television, telephone, hairdryer, minibar, room safe and tea / coffee making facilities. Lift to all floors.

Day Two

Day Three

This morning we’ll have a brief spell of free time in Boppard before we embark on a relaxing cruise along the Rhine to Koblenz where upon arrival we will have some time to look around and have some lunch. This afternoon we continue by coach to Königswinter, a historic Rhine Valley town located at the foot of the Siebengebirge Hills. Here we enjoy a journey on Germany's oldest cog railway, the Drachenfelsbahn, which will take us up to the summit of Drachenfels Mountain. During the journey we’ll pass Schloss Drachenburg - a beautiful villa that is said to have inspired the castle in Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty'. On arrival at the top of the mountain you will see the ruins of the 12th century Burg Drachenfels and enjoy spectacular views across the River Rhine.

B, D

Day Four

Today we head to the breath-taking Moselle Valley and the fairytale-esque riverside town of Cochem from where we embark on a round-trip cruise along the Moselle River, enjoying views of unspoilt lush-green countryside dotted with vineyards. After the cruise we spend the rest of the day in Cochem at leisure, allowing an opportunity to explore the Old Town’s narrow streets and twisting, maze-like alleys, quaint pastel coloured half-timbered buildings and imposing town gates. Literally unmissable is the magnificent 11th century Reichsburg Castle, a Gothic masterpiece which is perched above the town on a rocky outcrop from where there are fantastic views.

B, D

Day Five

This morning we check-out of the hotel and travel to Brohl for a journey on the Vulkan Express, a unique narrow gauge railway. The line meanders up through the Brohl Valley into the Eifel Hills, where dramatic rock formations were created during a period of volcanic activity. Opened in 1901, the 11 mile journey takes one and a half hours as the locomotives reach a speed of 20km, climbing around 1,310 ft! Following this we board the coach and commence our journey back to Lille for another overnight stay.

Day Six

We depart Lille this morning and make our way to Calais for our return Eurotunnel crossing to Folkestone, then continue on home to north Wales.
