The Dordogne Valley & Basque Country

Day One

Early departure for our journey south to Dover and a ferry crossing to Calais. On arrival in Calais we then continue to Amiens where we stay at the Ibis Styles Amiens Centre for one night. This evening savour a meal at one of the many delightful local restaurants and soak up the lively atmosphere of this historic city.

Day Two

Today we check out of our hotel and visit the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, preserved as a poignant memorial since 1944. The village was left untouched after Nazi troops massacred its residents and set the entire community ablaze, serving today as a powerful reminder of the atrocities of war. After our visit, we continue to Périgueux, where we check in to the Mercure Périgueux Centre for three nights.

Day Three

We visit the world-renowned wine village of Saint-Émilion, whose winemaking heritage dates back to Roman times, when vines were first planted here in the early 2nd century. This tradition was later nurtured by the monk Émilion, who settled in the area to worship and cultivate the vineyards. From these humble beginnings, Saint-Émilion has flourished into one of the most celebrated wine-producing regions in France. During our visit, we enjoy a tour and wine tasting at Château Villemaurine. Set on the prestigious clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, the château beautifully combines centuries of heritage with modern winemaking, producing distinguished wines while preserving the rich history of the estate.

Day Four

Today we explore the beautifully preserved medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, one of France's finest historic towns. Wander its maze of cobbled lanes, lined with honey-coloured stone buildings, elegant Renaissance mansions, half-timbered houses and hidden courtyards that transport you back in time. We then continue to the medieval bastide town of Domme, perched high above the Dordogne Valley. Stroll through its charming streets and historic market square and take in the spectacular panoramic views across the river and surrounding countryside. Our final stop is the picturesque riverside village of La Roque-Gageac, nestled between towering limestone cliffs and the River Dordogne. Here we enjoy a leisurely cruise along the river, offering wonderful photo opportunities, including magnificent views of the imposing Château de Castelnaud, dramatically perched high above the water.

Day Five

We check out of our hotel and travel south, stopping in the elegant seaside resort of Biarritz on France's beautiful Basque coast. Renowned for its sweeping golden beaches, grand Belle Époque architecture and imperial heritage, Biarritz has long been one of the most fashionable destinations on France's Atlantic coast. Enjoy some free time to explore this charming Basque town, stroll along the waterfront or relax at one of its inviting cafés. We then continue across the border into Spain to San Sebastián, one of Europe's most celebrated coastal cities. On arrival, we check in to the Zinema7 Hotel, located in the Amara district, where we will stay for the next four nights.

Day Six

Today is yours to enjoy at leisure in the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastián. Explore the atmospheric Old Town, where a maze of narrow cobbled streets opens onto the picturesque harbour, home to both the local fishing fleet and elegant pleasure craft. Stroll along the famous La Concha Beach, widely regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful urban beaches, or discover the city's other scenic stretches of coastline. San Sebastián also boasts a wealth of cultural and architectural treasures, including its impressive 19th-century Neo-Gothic cathedral, elegant Belle Époque buildings and numerous parks and gardens adorned with fountains and striking open-air sculptures by Périgueux, Francehondarribia renowned local artists. With its vibrant cafés, world-famous pintxos bars and relaxed seaside atmosphere, there are countless ways to spend the day.

Day Seven

Today we travel to Bilbao, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that has transformed itself into one of Spain's most exciting cultural destinations. Dominating the skyline is Frank Gehry's spectacular Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, an architectural masterpiece and one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Enjoy free time to explore the atmospheric old town, where the original medieval Seven Streets are lined with historic buildings, traditional shops and lively cafés. Perhaps take a ride the funicular to the summit of Mount Artxanda for breathtaking panoramic views across the city or enjoy a relaxing cruise along the Nervión River for a different perspective of Bilbao's striking blend of historic and contemporary architecture.

Day Eight

We travel to the picturesque Basque fishing town of Hondarribia, nestled on the French border. Renowned for its beautifully preserved medieval walled Old Town and Michelin-starred gastronomy, this charming town blends rich maritime heritage with timeless character. Next, we continue to Col de Saint-Ignace, where we board the historic Petit Train de La Rhune for a scenic ascent to the summit of La Rhune, the iconic mountain of the Basque Country. Travelling in vintage carriages, we will enjoy spectacular panoramic views stretching across the Pyrenees and the Atlantic Ocean. At the summit, there is free time to explore and take in the breathtaking scenery or enjoy a leisurely walk before returning to Col de Saint-Ignace. Rejoining our coach, we continue to the charming French fishing port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Here there will be some free time to wander through the town, browse the shops or stroll along the attractive seafront promenade. With its sheltered bay, colourful Basque architecture and renowned culinary scene, Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a delightful place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.

Day Nine

This morning, we check out of our hotel and travel to La Rochelle, one of France's most attractive and historic harbour towns, where we stay overnight. Enjoy some free time to explore this vibrant coastal city at your leisure. The bustling Old Port is lined with cafés and restaurants and is often enlivened by street performers, market stalls and visiting yachts. Beyond the waterfront, the charming old town reveals elegant arcaded streets and an impressive collection of beautifully preserved 17th- and 18th-century buildings, making La Rochelle a delight to discover.

Day Ten

We depart La Rochelle and continue north through the picturesque French countryside towards the port city of Caen. En route, we visit the magnificent Mont Saint-Michel, one of France's most iconic and awe-inspiring landmarks. Rising dramatically from a rocky tidal islet in a vast bay, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has welcomed pilgrims for over a thousand years. Crowned by its spectacular medieval abbey, Mont Saint-Michel enchants visitors with its narrow cobbled streets, ancient ramparts and remarkably well-preserved medieval architecture. There will be time to explore this extraordinary island and soak up its unique atmosphere before we continue to Caen for our overnight stay.

Day Eleven

We check out of our hotel and travel to the Caen port for our return sailing to Portsmouth. On arrival in Portsmouth we continue our journey home to North Wales.
